Weaving a Life out of Fire and Dance

"Having that connection with the element (of fire), respecting it-and using it to create beauty-that's what I love." Hallie Seronko is embarking on the less-traditional career of teaching and spinning fire. "What if I put all my passions and bliss aside to do the normal safe thing to do and I die tomorrow? Then I haven't really truly lived in my opinion."

As dusk turns to dark, she lights candles around the back yard. Meditative music floats softly through the open windows of the house; friends gather on the deck. She hands a wet towel to a friend with instructions on safety, retrieves the specially designed balls, called poi, from the fuel and pauses for a moment.

In the dark, one of the poi flares off a candle, passes the flame to the second. She spins the flame gently in the darkness, until the momentum carries the fireballs into comet-trails of arching spirals and woven circles — fire with dance. Dance with fire.

She says: “I’m here to be alive and live and exist and make every moment as beautiful as I can.

“So that’s where fire comes in. It just captured my heart and it’s what I want to do and what brings me joy whenever I do it — and that’s a big part of creating beauty in each moment for me.

“Fire is a really beautiful way of expressing the magic of being alive.”

The fire spinner is Hallie Seronko. You may have seen her, or someone like her, dancing with unlit poi at concerts or street fairs. Spinning fire is rarer, needs a special, safe place; it’s more challenging — and more exciting for both performer and audience, drawn as we are like moths to a flame.

“There is this danger: Touch fire and you will get burned… And so to have five minutes (before the flame goes out) to actually dance with this element — almost unite with it— have a bond with it — is so magical.

The root of dancing with fire is the ancient art of spinning poi — the word is Maori, meaning ball on a string. Warriors of New Zealand would spin poi to increase strength and coordination for battle. Women kept their hands flexible for weaving.

The tradition immigrated and evolved; Maori did not light their poi. Today, though, there is a growing culture of fire dancers and poi spinners as artists develop their own styles, choreography and meaning.

“During the dance, I go really inside and it’s a meditative experience. Actually, I like to use ‘prayerformance’ instead of ‘performance’ because it puts you really present in the moment.”

The first time Hallie saw fire dancing was when she was 15 years old at a String Cheese festival.

“I thought it was the most beautiful, inspiring thing, but it never crossed my mind that I would end up doing it and being so passionate about it.”

After she graduated from high school, Hallie criss-crossed the country with eight friends in a Volkswagen bus. She followed concerts and worked at festivals, practiced poi, met other fire spinners. And decided: Fire was to be her career.

“For a while I was just pushing the fire thing aside, saying oh, that’s just play; (something else) is what I should be doing…I came to this place where there is no ‘should.’ What do I want to be doing? I want to be doing the fire thing — so that’s what I should do.

“I realized that doing the fire, creating these experiences and this joy and this magic is just as important as learning to live sustainably and going to college and becoming a doctor. There are so many people in this world and infinite options and if I choose not to do it, somebody else is going to choose to do it.”

Hallie is 22 years old. While for many of us, our course was charted through parental expectations or college-right-after-high school, or the necessity of a job, Hallie is inventing her own way to this career of fire performance and instruction.

“The paths are different, but any society creates a path for people. I feel like some of us decide to start bushwhacking instead of staying on the path. I feel like I’m bushwhacking. It’s exhilarating; sometimes it’s scary. But there’s no going back once you start.

“You can never know what’s going to happen. Even if you try to have a planned course, you never know what’s really going to come — we don’t have that control. We can try, and I do try, but at the same time, why not experiment?

“For me, I don’t see why everybody shouldn’t be able to follow their bliss and follow their hearts — so I’m experimenting because the only way to know is through your own experience.”

One might ask about the job security, the 401(k) possibilities and retirement plan. “I don’t have anything to lose right now,” she says. “I’m young.”

“I’d rather do what I love in each moment and if I keep doing what I love in each moment, I will always be doing what I love, no matter what.

“I would rather be living my truth doing what I love and not have very much money — than having a lot of money and be doing what I’m not passionate about.

“For me, my health and spirituality come way before finances. But finances are really useful tools to have. So I’m definitely working on finding that balance between making money and my bliss — or trying to incorporate the two. And that’s the experiment.”

Since I got into wire wrapping (and through a few years of intense love, the piece had broken) I decided to give it a copper face lift...and some matching earrings. I made this with copper wire, peacock feathers (obviously), pheasant feathers, lapis and sodalite. The center piece (third-eye) is a piece of Tibetan quartz that was given to me years ago at a Rainbow gathering in West Virginia.

It's luscious. ;)

Raw-Vegan Sushi

For the "rice" I chop either turnip or jicama in a food processor.

Then simply squeeze out the excess juices by hand or with a siv bag.

Spread onto half a sheet of nori and fill with avocado, sprouts, red pepper, kimchi, carrot...

whatever you want...

Tuck and roll!

Slice with a wet knife, wiping the knife off after each slice.

Dip in Nama Shoyu with wasabi or almond butter sauce:

Mix almond butter with fresh squeezed orange juice, Nama Shoyu, and a dash of cayenne.

Raw-Vegan Spring Rolls

I love Thai food! Here is an easy way to make fast, nourishing, Thai rolls:

I use collard greens as the wrapper. These can be used raw or blanched for a better "wrapper".

To blanch the collards bring fresh water just below a boil and dunk the leaves in for a couple seconds. They are no longer raw, but have lost minimal nutrients and are easier to digest for those who are transitioning into a raw foods diet.

Then matchstick (chop into long thin pieces) carrots and red bell pepper to put in the wrapper with avocado, chopped purple cabbage and cilantro, sprouts and some type of citrus fruit such as pineapple, orange or even mango.

Wrap it up! I fold the bottom over the stuffings, then wrap one side over, rolling it over the opposite side and viola!

Dipping sauce: Blend almond or walnut butter with fresh squeezed orange juice, nama shoyu, coconut milk (optl), and a dash of cayenne pepper.

Aphrodisiac Truffles

I'm pretty much a big fan of anything aphrodisiac...

so here is a recipe for some luscious herbal truffles:

Blend one cup of cashew butter (Artisana's is the best) with a half cup of raw honey in a blender with one Tbls of coconut oil,

1 heaping Tbls of cacao powder

1 tsp of maca powder

1 tsp of kava kava powder

Place mixture in a bowl and knead a small handful of goji berries into the mixture.

Roll into little one inch balls and roll the balls in a dish of hemp seed.

Bliss out!

Rejuvelac

Rejuvelac is a simple probiotic base for many living foods recipes such as seed and nut cheeses, salad dressings, soups, etc.

Rejuvelac can be made from most sprouted grains, but my preference is quinoa.

To start rejuvelac, sprout about 2 Tbls of quinoa in a mason jar with a screen cover, or sprouting lid.

Rinse 2-3 times a day for 1-2 days and allow to drain at a 45 degree angle.

After the quinoa has sprouted, rinse and place in another clean mason jar with a generous amount of fresh water.

Cover with clean cloth and rubber band and allow to sit at room temperature for 24-48 hours.

Strain and add one fresh squeezed lemon for taste and preservation.

Refrigerate and use as necessary in recipes, or in place of water to thin dressings, soups and pates. Or simply drink for a probiotic digestive boost.

Good Rising Power Smoothie

One of my favorite morning boosts, this smoothie is full of super food, balancing goodness.

Blend one banana, one orange, one pear and an inch piece of ginger root in a blender with hemp milk (hemp seeds blended with fresh water).

Add 1 Tbls raw sesame tahini

1 Tbls flaxseed oil

1 Tbls bee pollen

1 tsp spirulina

1 tsp psillium husk powder

Blend until smooth and charge up!

Asian Noodle Salad

Spiralize two zuccini's

Cube a cucumber, red bell pepper and a large tomato

Chop two baby bok choy, some green onions, some cilantro, a garlic clove and a half tsp of fresh jalapeno

Grate a Tbls of ginger root and a 1/2 tsp of horseradish root

Mix together in a large bowl, sprinkle with a pinch of red chili flakes.

Marinate the dish in two Tbls of Nama Shoyu, 1/4 C of apple cider vinegar and 1/2 C olive oil for an hour or more.

Adjust proportions according to taste

I'll admit that I don't really measure anything, so all of my measurements are guess work ; )

Raw Tacos

Yum!!!

These are one of my favorite things to make because they are sooo good!

For the pate you will need:

1 cup sunflower seeds (soaked for 4 hours)

1 cup pumpkin seeds (soaked for 4 hours)

1 Tbls olive oil

2 limes juiced

Himalayan sea salt (to taste)

A handful of fresh cilantro

2 green onions

1 clove garlic

cayenne pepper (to taste)

Blend ingredients into a chunky pate in a food processor.

For the salsa:

dice one large tomato

dice 1 clove garlic

dive fresh jalapeno to taste (I like it hot)

chop 1 green onion

chop a handful of cilantro

juice 1 lime

add a pinch of Himalayan salt

Mix ingredients in a bowl.

For the "sour" cream:

1 Thai young coconut, meat and water

handful of cilantro

squeeze of lime juice

Blend ingredients in blender until smooth.

For the shells I chop a purple cabbage in half from bottom to top. I find the leaves easier to pull apart if I soak the halves in water during the prep time for the other ingredients. Pull the leaves apart gently so they don't tear.

Put a scoop of pate in each shell with a wedge of avocado, a scoop of salsa,and some sprouts.

Pour a little coconut cream sauce on top and give thanks!

Halo Fire Luminance offers the magic of fire prayerformance and instruction for those captivated by the Polynesian art of fire dance! I have been practicing the art of poi for four years. I have recently branched out into the use of other tools of fire manipulation such as double staff, fans, and hoola hoop. I am able to facilitate solo or group performances as an honorary member of the world class performance troupe known as the Pyronauts. I have performed at festivals and events across the US, as well as British Colombia and Mexico. These events include Alchemy at the Shire on the Big Island of Hawaii, the String Cheese Incident at Horning's Hideout with Peak Experience Productions, the Burning Man Conclave with the Burning Otters, Raw Spirit Festival with the Pyronauts, and many more. I began teaching poi technique and movement two years ago in my home town of Boise, ID. I instruct beginning level and intermediate-advanced level classes and playshops. Halo Fire Luminance is also the outlet for my passion of living food nutrition and creation. I have been eating a primarily raw plant-food diet since living on a raw community on Kauai called One Love Gardens, two years ago. Never have I felt so alive and close to existence! The raw-vegan diet is based on the purity of body, mind and spirit. Creating nutritional works of art with chef Bruce Horowitz at the Mystic Garden Party and Raw Spirit Festival has inspired me to share this amazing gift with others. This is a space to share my recipes of raw-vegan alchemy and its benefits. Check in for fresh creations of living decadence! Here I can be contacted for living food catering and classes.
